There was a time when math didn’t always come easily to me. I had strong number sense and could often solve problems mentally, but I struggled with areas of math that required heavy processing and comprehension. In class or during homework, I could understand the material, but during tests, confusing instructions or pressure could derail me.

Later in life, I was diagnosed as autistic, which helped explain why some of those challenges were never identified earlier. For years, I had to figure out what worked for me on my own. That experience shaped the way I see learning today: sometimes a student is capable all along. They just need support that matches how they learn.

Everything changed when I began taking math courses in college. I found myself naturally helping classmates whenever they got stuck on a concept. I loved breaking ideas down in a way that finally made sense to them, and seeing their relief when it clicked was incredibly rewarding. The math tutors around me even encouraged me to become a tutor myself.

Since then, I’ve built the tools to help students succeed through formal tutor training, an Associate’s degree in Math and Science, a degree in Psychology, and years of hands-on experience helping students with different learning styles.

Today, my tutoring approach focuses on both the what and the why behind a student’s struggle. I look for the root cause, lead with their strengths, simplify confusing concepts, teach practical skills, and build confidence along the way. I also use psychology-based strategies to improve motivation, engagement, and learning habits.

The results are powerful: students begin to truly get it. Math starts making sense. Test scores improve. Learning gaps begin to close. Most importantly, students gain confidence and start seeing themselves as capable learners again.
